What Information We Collect

When you use our website, take the assessment or purchase our guides, we collect:

Name and email address when you sign up for our free worksheet, create an account or purchase a guide
Assessment responses and results - your answers to the Terrain assessment, the territory profile it produces, the subject combinations you view, and any ratings or feedback you give on them
Purchase history including which guides you've bought and when
Payment information (processed securely by our payment provider - we do not store your card details)
School access details - if you access Terrain through your school, the school's name and the access code you used

Information Collected Automatically

Technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and device information when you visit our website

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

Run the assessment - Produce your territory profile and the subject guidance that follows from it
Deliver your purchases - Send you the guides you've paid for
Send email sequences - Welcome emails when you download our free worksheet, and post-purchase emails to help you get the most from the guides
Provide customer support - Respond to your questions and resolve any issues
Improve our products - Understand how people use our guides and website to make them better
Support research - Help research into how young people choose their subjects, using anonymised data only (see Research below)
Send marketing communications - If you've opted in, we'll send occasional emails about new guides and resources (you can unsubscribe at any time)

We will never sell your data to third parties or use it for purposes you haven't agreed to.

Legal Basis for Processing (UK GDPR)

We process your personal data under the following legal bases:

Contract performance - To run the assessment and deliver guides you've purchased
Legitimate interests - To improve our products, send post-purchase support emails, and support independent academic research using anonymised data that cannot identify you
Consent - For marketing emails (you can withdraw consent at any time)

Where you use Terrain through your school, the school decides how Terrain is used with its students and we process assessment data on the school's behalf (see Young People's Privacy below).

How We Store and Protect Your Data

Storage Location

Your data is stored on servers operated by our service providers in the United States, Australia and the European Union. Where data leaves the UK we rely on the safeguards described under International Data Transfers.

Security Measures

We take reasonable precautions to protect your information:

Secure encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all data transmission
Payment processing handled by PCI-DSS compliant providers
Regular security updates to our systems
Access to personal data limited to essential personnel only

Retention Period

We retain your data for as long as:

You maintain an active account with us
Required for tax and accounting purposes (typically 6 years after your last purchase)
You continue to engage with our marketing emails

Where you use Terrain through your school, we keep assessment data for the period agreed with the school, and delete it on request at the end of the programme.

You can request deletion of your data at any time (see Your Rights below).

Research

Terrain works with universities and other research partners to understand how young people choose their A-Levels and whether tools like Terrain help.

Where we share data for research, it is anonymised first. Researchers may see territory profiles, subject preferences and the paths people take through the assessment, but never names, email addresses, school names or anything else that could identify an individual.

We do not share identifiable data with researchers. If a research project ever needed identifiable data, we would ask for your consent separately before taking part.

Our website currently does not use cookies for analytics or tracking. We only use essential technical cookies required for the website to function properly (such as remembering your session if you're logged in).

Young People's Privacy

Terrain is designed for young people aged 15 to 16 who are choosing their A-Levels. They use the assessment in one of two ways:

Through their school, where the school has arranged access and remains responsible for deciding how Terrain is used with its students. In this case we process assessment data on the school's behalf under a written agreement with the school.
With a parent or guardian, who creates the account and purchases the guides. The account holder is the parent or guardian, and the young person uses the assessment with their knowledge.

We collect only what the assessment needs to work - responses, results and the subject combinations viewed - and we do not use a young person's data for marketing. Marketing emails go only to adults who have opted in.
